Boy-Ed, Captain Karl. Born, of German-Turkish parentage. He had been a prodigy on the staff of Grand Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz. He served as naval attache in several posts including Washington, DC. In that position, he and Captain Franz von Papen, served under Germany's ambassador to the United States, Johann Heinrich von Bernstorff. Both Boy-Ed and von Papen were expelled from the US in 1915 amid alegations of espionage and sabotage of munitions industries in the then-neutral US. Before he left, Boy-Ed said, "Of course I refrain at the hour of my departure from again refuting all the stories which were told about me in the American newspapers." Most of them, he said, "were invented" by members of the press.
